Last shots!

Monday we went to the doctor to get her last shots of the first year! So in the meanwhile we know her size and weight... ok I will tell you as well! She is 65 cm tall and she weighs 7.5 kg! It's a big girl. Today we were out for a walk as the weather was perfect and we met some other babies. There was a baby of 7 months old and that baby was even smaller than our 4 month old girl.

Grandma is realy happy with her because when she goes out for a walk with her (when daddy is working) people tell her things like; she looks like a mixed baby or she is so cute or she is so pretty or she is so tall. Well I guess she is just different than most of the babies out there. And we are happy as long as Caroline is healthy and happy!

A video of Caroline's first 'play' time.

Special Day

It's a big day today; the new year started (year of the tiger), it's valentine's day and more important Caroline is four months old. Enough reasons to celebrate.
Over the last month she has changed a lot... for instance she laughs loudly and more often than before. She also became sensitive to tickles. She knows when it is bath time and so when she enters the bathroom she calms down right away and is waiting on her changing path with a big smile. Once she is in the water she starts to kick and let the water splash all over us.
Her hand-eye coordination are improving slowly, she does not grab things by accident anymore but can reach out for things and holds on to them. Since two weeks she plays with things and does that very often by herself for longer periods of time. One of her favorite toys are balloons. We tie a few balloons around something that she can shake and so she sees the balloons dancing a meter above her.
Every morning she wakes up very hapily and smile when she see you. Then she starts 'talking' to you... she has more and more sounds she knows so that it is lovely to listen to her. One day she even gave me a speech. In the evening she falls asleep by herself by sucking on her index finger. If there is a day where she is more grumpy she uses a pacifier. During the day she sleeps way less; she usually only takes 2 to 3 naps a day.
She loves listening to the guitar and turns her body towards sounds.
We are enjoying our happy and healthty baby.
Enjoy the year of the tiger!

We hope she keeps on improving. She is still sleeping in our bed at night but during the day she takes her naps in her own bed.
The picture is one I took yesterday after she woke up in her bed.
As I am writing this she is listening and looking at her mom playing guitar, she just loves it and will cry when mom stops. A rock star is born :)

Almost Three Months

Our little baby is almost three months old so we went to the doctor again for a shot. So before the shot they did a little check; she is now 60 cm tall and she ways 7 kg! What a heavy girl, we can't wait for her to start crawling so she can loose some ;) Sunday I checked how fast she drinks, mommy pumped milk and while she was gone I gave this to her; it took her less than five minutes to finish 60 ml. She is a real drinker like her day

When she go her shot the nurse was saying sorry to her but Caroline didn't mind it that much because she cried for only 5 seconds and ten minutes after the shot she was sleeping.

That's it for the moment...

Almost Three Months

In less then a week Caroline will be three months old. Only a few things have changed since the last post; she has discovered that she has feet and she sings together with us!
And yes she already sings better than her dad ;)

The last one for today...

Things I didn't mention yet...

Since about a week she became a real baby, not just the one that sleeps and eats. She is awake for several hours a day and now loves to take. Caroline has about 15 different sounds, some of them even sound Dutch so she is already a multi lingual baby ;) Also she loves to smile at her parents, it is just great to see your own baby smile at you every day.

Since her birth she doubled her weight in about two months and so now she is way over 6 kg. Last Tuesday when the nurse measured her she was 57 cm tall. Also she has more room for braincells as her head became bigger as well.

Fellow teachers had a baby over a year ago (their daughter knows how to say Caroline very well) and so she does not fit in their swing anymore therefor they gave it to Caroline and she loves it!

The other day we went for noodles as the weather was so beautiful and afterwards to the market. Now people in Chengdu put 7 layers on and this goes the same for babies. This is because they do not use any heater. In our place it is nice and warm and so Caroline only has two or three layers on. While we were walking people were saying that she must be cold while I was responding in my best Chinese that she is not. One woman even came under her shirt to check if she was warm enough... strange people!

Strong girl

Something that I never mentioned here... the second day in the hospital Caroline showed how stong she is. When the nurse put her on her belly and rubbed her back with baby oil she pushed herself up and moved her head from left to right (or right to left I forgot the details). Now this helped us over the last two months as we didn't have to be as careful with her neck.

Now why? I have an explanation for this! While she was still in the womb her mom was teaching the kids in school violin and almost all of them are beginners. I passed by from time to time and in the beginning of the school year it sounded terrible (the were wonderful at the Christmas performance!) and so guess who must have been shaking her had! That's right my lovely daughter.

And now since about a week she loves to stand up while daddy holds her, she keeps on pushing and pushing. Every day she stand a little longer and of course this is looking funny with her chubby cheeks.
She is also getting more control over her hands, she sucks her hand when she is hungry but she cannot get her thumb out of her fist so it is looking pretty funny. I will try to snap a picture of that as well, in the meanwhile you can enjoy her cute feet.

Immunization

Last Tuesday was a big day for Caroline, being 8 weeks old she needed her first shots.

We went to an internation doctor since my parents brought the shots back from Belgium. All went realy well, she first had a little check and the doctor said she is a very healtty baby. So after going through the whole talk of what might happen... two nurses gave two shot at the same time. Yes they even counted down!

Caroline cried for about five minutes and two tears rolled but she was doing fine for the rest of time. Of course we were worried for the next few days since there is a 50% chance that she becomes a little ill. But no way with a fat body like hers and good milk from mom, she did not show anything. In fact last night she slept the whole night in her own bed! Next week we will move her bed to her own room. She is becoming a big girl!

Attention... lots of attention.

People here in Chengdu love babies. There are times when you can walk without getting disturbed but most of the times people ask questions and want to see our beautiful Caroline. Of course people are saying that Li Yan and the baby should stay inside.
Anyway Caroline gets so much attention that today a woman on an electric bike was turning her head to look into the stroler (see picture) and forgot all about the turn so she bumped the side and fell down!
It took a while before this happened to me and it happened only once that someone bumped something while admiring my big nose but Caroline is only 18 days and this already happens! I don't know what the future will bring for her...

Caroline taken with new camera

Today we bought a new point and shoot camera so that Li Yan can take every moment she wants to snap. It's the Canon Ixus 200 and it just a fun thing. You have a touch screen and different fun ways to take pictures. Anyway there will be loads of pictures in the future and not to forget HD videos! Here is a sample from the first day and well I took it. I'm pretty sure that I will enjoy it as much as mom!
Cheers

First Bath

First Bath

About half an hour ago Caroline took her first bath! Last night after we washed her the umbilical cord fell off and so we were very happy to be able to give her a bath today.
We still have to find a routine since now we have to do this in the bathroom. And of course she needs to get used to it as well. At first she cried a little bit but after a minute she was ok with it... hopefully she will enjoy it every day!
Have a great evening.

Health Check

Caroline Lambert

Her umbilical cord is about to fall off, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow she will loose it! It sounds like a big step, one of these steps that can go in the category of drivers license,...
Next week the woman is sheduled to come again, I did not see her but if she would step through our door again I will kick her out! Reason; she made 30+ scratches in our bamboo floor! When I came home after school, I sat down in the sofa and saw all these scratches. Li Yan took a look at them and told me that this is from the woman for sure because these were the places she had been.
We called her and told her but she says that she put a plastic proctection (these are super thin) over her shoes so it can't be her! I hope one day my daughter is going to read this blog so I am not going to say what I think.
Anyway good and bad news today! Luckily our daughter is happy and healthy.

Traditions

Chinese traditions say that a newborn cannot go out for at least the first month and mom has to wear a hat, long pants and long sleeves. Even when it is 30 degrees. Mom cannot even take a shower and especialy not was here hair for 30 days.
People still believe in this. Chinese grandparents are holy and they will tell their children what to do and what not to do.
But in these modern days where we have hair dryers and heating it does not make sence anymore. Who wants to smell for a month?
I understand that people were poor during the Mao era and had no heathing in wintertime so the best thing to do was to recover (keep in mind the malnutrion) well before you started to do other things or even getting your hair wet cause of easily getting a cold.
Caroline has modern thinking parents... so Li Yan does take a shower, we use our heating and Caroline loves to take walks with her daddy.
For about 20 minutes she stays awake and looks around. Of course she only sees light and shadows for the moment but she enjoys it.
And sitting in the carseat/stroler feels like being in the womb... nothing better.

Here she is in her carseat when she is two days old. There are more pictures on flickr, just follow the link and I will take some more this weekend.

The Big Day

Wednesday (October 14th 2009) morning 3 o'clock Li Yan's water broke... so I asked if she was sure her water broke and yes I saw it did. So we got dressed, took our bags and walked downstairs. Since it was hard for Li Yan to walk, she went to sit with the guard and I ran to the main road to take a taxi. Five minutes later we were on the way to our new life. During the taxi ride I asked Li Yan what she thought it would be, be she kindly returned the question and so I said girl since everyone is saying boy.

We arrived pretty fast since there was no traffic. In the hospital we asked were we had to go to and he said to go and pay first. So we went to the cashier but there was nobody. I went to find someone and got the person to follow me to Li Yan. After asking where to pay the person knocked very loud on the cashier's window and a sleepy voice asked what was going on. We paid something around 2 euros and the sleepy man told us to go to the emergency room.

We arrived there but again nobody to see. So we started knocking on doors and finally one woman asked why she was been woken up. In a sleepy and annoyed voice she said she had nothing to do with this and we had to go to the second floor. So off we went.

Again we saw an empty hallway and started knocking on doors. The third sleepy voice asked what was going on. And after Li Yan told what happened she directed us to the first floor to wait there for her. So we had finally found the right person that could examen Li Yan. So her conclusion was... "your water broke you will have to go to the other side of the hospital to the sixth floor". But of course first we had to go and pay for the birth. You have to bring cash in China cause the ask you to pay 300 euros up front. What would they do if you don't pay... push the baby back into the womb?

So on a hospital bed we went to the famous sixth floor. The elevator door opened and Li Yan disappeared after two doors... forbidden for non pregnant people to enter. There I was surrounded by a nervous walking-up-and-down daddy-to-be, a snorry man and two older women. So there was nothing else to do than to go and sit on the bag with the baby clothes... nice and soft.

About an hour later and nurse came to ask for my cellphone and so my last contact with the outside world disappeared. I still didn't contact my director to say that we would not make it the coming days.
At around 7 o'clock, the sun was rising, I finally got my phone back and still didn't know what was going on! But relief came when ten minutes later the doctor told me to put on a doctor's coat and slippers. I could go and see my wife and maybe my baby?

So there she was, my wife, in a bed doing nothing. Her water broke 4 hours before but there were no contractions yet. We talked for about ten minutes and I had to leave again. In the meanwhile new nurses and doctors had arrived and told me not to sit so close to the exit. So there was an option to sit on terrible plastic benches or sitting on the stairs... so well I choose to sit on the stairs and wait. The communication between my wife and myself was going through writing notes and a nurse/postwoman delivering them. On one of the notes it said that her mom would arrive and she would call me when she was at the entrance. So two hours went by and finally Li Yan's mom arrived. I was not 'alone' anymore, but still there was noone to communicate with because my Chinese is limited and when she talks to me she talks so fast that I don't get a word. I felt lucky with my fellow teachers who kept on sending me text messages to ask how it was going and so they kept me busy. And with her mom being there I could at least have breakfast.

After a little bit the nurse came back and asked for a cell phone again, but this time I gave my wife's so at least there was communication possible between us! We called and she told me that I would be able to see here again soon. A little later I could put my jacket on again and go back in. Li Yan had been moved to a different waiting room but now she was all alone in there and so it felt a little less like a factory but still weird with all the empty beds around her. She told me that if after a few hours there were still no contractions the doctor would induce. And she also mentioned that her mom and I should go and have lunch. So off we went to a small restaurant. Mom told me I had to order and so I did ask for two of my favorite dishes. I wanted to eat but didn't at the same time. Anyway the food was terrible and it was way too expensive.

On the way back to the hospital we stopped for some dumplings that the mother-to-be had asked for (yes food you have to bring yourself in Chinese hospitals). We gave them to the nurse who passed them on. In the meanwhile they had induced the labour with a shot and an IV. And I had received the news that I would soon be able to see here... after only two hours. So time went by on the stairs... untill three o'clock. I was already pretty good at putting on the doctor's jacket! Now they had moved my wife to a private waiting room and they let me stay there the entire time. As time went by contractions were closer and more painful. The drip slowly dripped and we waited and waited untill the drip was done. The opening was way too small and contractions stopped coming. In the meanwhile it was about six in the evening and they had the good news that it was resting time.

So on a bed the was being transferred to the third floor into a room and what a room! The room was 30 degrees and no wind. No if you think this is bad... I forgot to mention that there were five more beds in this room and five baby beds and five chairs. Babies crying, moms talking loudly to grandmas! If you could describe hell, well this would be one way! So I went to the shop to buy some cold coke and water. Big surprise when I came back... my wife was having natural contractions and my mother in law was 'fanning' her with a piece of paper. So I took over and drank my two cold cokes at the same time. The contractions were more painful then before and I could tell cause she was holding my hand! Soon after the doctor came by, and I will have to mention this was a male doctor, to examine her. His diagnotic was that she would have to rest for the night and tomorrow it would be time for another induction. Sure just take a rest when you are having natural contractions that are about 3 minutes away from each other.

About 15 minutes later Li Yan told me she could not stand the pain anymore and as the doctor was not hopeful nor helpful she told me she wanted to have a operation. But as she always wanted to have a natural birth I told her to wait two hours because I had the feeling that the baby was not that far away. I never believed in the 'doctor' that never gave birth himself. So time went by and the contractions because more painful. And with those temperatures the cokes were empty soon. So luckily my in law bought me some more. After about two hours in hell another doctor decided that it was time for Li Yan to go back up to the sixth floor. We were happy, relieved and Li Yan was painful. These are the kind of situations where you learn new words in Chinese, the one I learned was pain!

So there we were on the sixth floor, soon enough Li Yan dissapeared behind the doors again. The nurse on door duty told us that we needed two diapers, a baby hat, a baby shirt and little blanket. Together with this we needed to give her a bar of chocolate and you won't believe it... a can of red bull! Soon enough we gave the nurse what she asked for and she left to see Li Yan. Not even two minutes after that I could put on my doctor's jacket again and followed the doctor in. There was my wife on a bed in a room with five other beds. It seamed like a very calm day. The contractions came sooner and harder. Regular checks told us that the opening was still to small but at around 9:40 the nurse checked and told me "you go". It was time for my baby to come and I could not see this. But I was already fortunated that I could hold Li Yan's hand in the waiting room since I was the only one allowed apart from pregnant women and staff!

So I walked out the doors and told my in-law that the baby was on the way but I did not know when. So it was my turn to walk up and down as I was nervous. But then only 20 minutes (at 10:08 pm) later the doctor came to tell me: "It's a girl"! But nothing to see. I started to send text messages to all the people that supported me that day and told them that Caroline Lambert was born. Soon enough the doctor came back with a beautiful newborn daughter. Six people came to look and all said that she looks like me. But where was my wife? Her mom told me something and I did not get it. 20 minutes later she told me again and I finally understood that I had to wait two hours see them again...

I had to share the news with my folks, but it was almost eleven and did not have an international phone card. So I went out on the street to find one but guess what... most of the shops were closed. Then I called a friend to ask for his Skype account so that I could spend his money to call home. There was this internet bar I went in and in my best Chinese I got them to understand that I needed skype so they tried to install it but no luck. They tried several time and again no luck. How could I tell my parents? So I was walking back and noticed a foreigner with a laptop in a hostel as I went in I explained him the situation and he told me he could help. With his iphone I could use skype. I dialed the number but the connection was so bad that my dad only understood daughter. But wasn't that the only thing he needed to hear?

Commercial baby talk

Yesterday there was a gathering of pregnant moms and future dads to learn how to take care of newborns. So as a good husband I went with Li Yan to a talk I was not going to understand anything about! We arrived on time and had a good seat and waited till 9:30 for the kick-off. But of course we had to wait half an hour longer before they actualy started because most of the people were late...
They started to introduce themselves and told us (I understood it after Li Yan translated) this was going to be a competition. Every mom to be got a sticker with a certain color. That color was your team and we turned out to be blue! My favourite color so for sure good luck.
The competition started and they needed four (one from each team) future dads. Since I was the only male with a big nose, big eyes and white skin (more like a farmers tan)... yes you can guess... I was an encouraged volunteer. My wife said something about changing baby dolls and as I recall my smelly babysitting experience I was up for it. After standing up they brought me a vest with weights in it that I had to put on, this was pretty weird to me cause why prentending pregnant when you have to change a baby doll. As I recall there is still a one child policy in China (they did change that policy in Shanghai this weekend though).
So it was not changing and cleaning smelly dolls but we had to experience how a pregnant woman feels (last summer, when I came back from Belgium where I gained 10 kilos, the experience was pretty real ). With Li Yan's translation I started pretending.
Now you have been reading this far so here is the clue of the day! The first thing we had to pretend was to sleep with the weights around us. So I sat down on my bottom and went to sleep on my side. And so immediatly I took a head start! All the other guys were sleeping on their back!? Do these dads sleep on the sofa? Or they never look at their wife/girlfriend? Maybe they are to drunk when they fall asleep. But a pregnant woman does not sleep on her back. Sometimes when I wake up at night and see my wife on her back I will push and turn her over gently. How can you NOT know this; are they married or ready to divorce?
Apart from sleeping we had to pretend some other daily moms actions and so I did fight the best I could to become a real pregnant woman. My job was over and a woman explained about sleeping on the side.
Following four new dads needed to change a baby doll and the competion ended with four couples playing a word game. That was it but before we got to know the final results there was a commercial break about baby milk since all of this was organized by a brand I don't even recall anymore ;)
So who was the winning team. You know I'm not writing all of this for nothing so of course it was the blue team.
This was the first time for me to win a competition in China, normaly a white face cannot win but 99 procent of my team looked pretty yellow.
Oh you're asking if there was a price. Well of course; we got a pair of baby socks! These socks even came with flyers of the milk powder.
Just ashame I did not bring my camera with me... because the rest was not very usefull.
Oh yeah in the afternoon we bought a sofa but I will spare you the details.

Four minutes after the sun came out for about a minute, just enough time to snap some pictures. Here is one of the and basicly the other 7 look almost the same ;) Just want to share this one with you.
