Chinese traditions say that a newborn cannot go out for at least the first month and mom has to wear a hat, long pants and long sleeves. Even when it is 30 degrees. Mom cannot even take a shower and especialy not was here hair for 30 days.
People still believe in this. Chinese grandparents are holy and they will tell their children what to do and what not to do.
But in these modern days where we have hair dryers and heating it does not make sence anymore. Who wants to smell for a month?
I understand that people were poor during the Mao era and had no heathing in wintertime so the best thing to do was to recover (keep in mind the malnutrion) well before you started to do other things or even getting your hair wet cause of easily getting a cold.
Caroline has modern thinking parents... so Li Yan does take a shower, we use our heating and Caroline loves to take walks with her daddy.
For about 20 minutes she stays awake and looks around. Of course she only sees light and shadows for the moment but she enjoys it.
And sitting in the carseat/stroler feels like being in the womb... nothing better.
Here she is in her carseat when she is two days old. There are more pictures on flickr, just follow the link and I will take some more this weekend.
